#3 - Avoiding Dementia by Avoiding Sweeteners

Written By Dr. Erwin Gemmer on June 26, 2019

Alzheimer's and Dementia Cause #3:  SUGAR, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP and ASPARTAME, the most-used SWEETENERS.

Sweeteners play a large and underreported role in the development of dementia.  Here is the short explanation.

Contrary to popular belief, our brains do not require glucose, and in fact they actually function better burning alternative fuels, fuels that come from eating healthy fats.

According to expert Dr. Ron Rosedale, Alzheimer's and other brain disorders are caused at least in part by constantly burning sugar instead of fats.

Here is how this occurs.

It was long thought that only the Pancreas made insulin.  However, researchers discovered in 2005 that your brain also produces insulin and, more importantly, that this brain insulin is necessary for the survival of brain cells.  Sugar and high fructose make this system so it won't work properly.  This harms the brain and results in loss of memory and brain function.  Full article here:  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2769828/

In your brain, this insulin is needed for complex chemical conversions to take place.  Without adequate brain insulin, cognition, learning and memory are impaired.  While this situation is far worse and more common among those with Type II diabetes, sugar, high fructose corn syrup and other sugars disrupt your brain function even if you're not diabetic.

For thousands of years, humans consumed no more than three or four pounds of sugar per year from all sources combined.  Now it is 150 to 200 pounds per year!  Ouch!!  Just one can of soda contains around 8 teaspoons.  Although one of Starbucks more popular drinks (caramel Frappuccino) is mostly ice.  The other main ingredient?  A sixth of a pound of sugar!!  All in just one drink!

Then, there's Aspartame.  Aspartame is known by dozens of different names so it sneaks into literally hundreds of different products. You probably know it as NutraSweet or Equal.

As bad as sugar and high fructose corn syrup are for your brain, Aspartame may be even worse.  It is also the number one source of complaints to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) among food-like products, with many thousands of complaints filed and over 91 documented symptoms related to its consumption.

One of the most common complaints is memory loss, often permanent.  And studies are now confirming Aspartame's role in the development of Alzheimer's.

How?  The most widely accepted theory is that Aspartame is broken down by our system (or by heat) into Formaldehyde.  Formaldehyde, whether from Aspartame or from vaccinations, causes brain damage (and of course, cancer, which will be discussed on another program).

Aspartame turns into formaldehyde which turns into Alzheimer's and other Dementia.  Simple enough!

One factor that make Aspartame even worse is when it is heated before consumption.  A well known example of this was labeled “Gulf War Syndrome.”  Millions of cans of diet soda were consumed by military personnel after they had sat on pallets for weeks in the 110 degree desert.

We were told, “Veterans experienced a cluster of medically unexplained chronic symptoms that included fatigue, headaches, joint pain, indigestion, insomnia, dizziness, respiratory disorders, and MEMORY PROBLEMS.”

Yes, these symptoms, including memory loss, are “medically unexplained” and will forever remain so until someone puts the most common complaints from Aspartame poisoning beside the most common complaints of Gulf War Syndrome and notices they are the same list.

Sugar.  High fructose corn syrup.  Aspartame.  All are great ways to damage your brain and impair your memory.

What are the smart sweeteners to use?

Stevia is probably best because it comes from a plant leaf that is naturally sweet.  Coconut sugar is also very good.  Monk fruit sweetener is pretty good.  Perhaps after that I would turn to raw honey.

Watch for the fourth lesson in our series in a day or two.  Don't forget!
